Age: You are at least 18 but not older than 25 years of age.

Duration of stay: An au pair is allowed to stay for a maximum period of one year in the Netherlands.

Language: the Netherlands does not have any language restrictions but a basic knowledge of English is expected. 

Which families can apply as host families?  Families with at least one child which is younger than 18 years of age. Single parents also qualify. The family must consist of a minimum of 2 persons.
To welcome an au pair in the Netherlands the host family needs to prove that they have sufficient funds. They need to have sufficient income to support themselves and the au pair.

Conditions: People who want to become an au pair in the Netherlands for more than 3 months need to meet the following requirements:

-have a valid passport
-have a health insurance with coverage in the Netherlands
-may not be married
-have no duty of care or be responsible for the actual care of his/her own family members
-have not previously stayed in the Netherlands on a residence permit
-did not previoulsy work for the same family
-Au Pairs are legally obliged to reside with the family

Working hours:  The au pair will have to work a maximum of 8 hours per day and a maximum of 30 hours per week.

Days off: An au pair in the Netherlands has 2 days off per week.

Pocket money: 300 euro per month minimum and 340 euro per month maximum.

Holiday: An Au Pair boy or girl is entitled to 2 weeks of paid vacation for every 12 moths that he/she has worked for the host family. If the Au Pair girl or boy stays with the family for less than 12 months, the Au Pair is also entitled to paid vacation but Au Pair and Host Family have to agree on how long these holidays should be.

Health insurance: Every person who applies for a residence permit in the Netherlands needs to have a health insurance. It is not necessarily a task of the host family to insure the au pair. We do not know whether special au pair insurances exist in the Netherlands. Please contact insurance companies to enquire about what kind of insurance they can offer and about prices.

Entry regulations:

For Au Pairs from EU Member States:

Young people from EU Member States and EEA countries don't need a visa to become an Au Pair in the Netherlands.

MVV (Authorization for temporary stay - Machtiging tot voorlopig verblijf):
Nationals of EU countries, of Australia, Canada, Japan, Liechtenstein, Monaco, New Zealand and Norway do not need an MVV.
An MVV is also not required if the person already has a Dutch residence permit.

A person who does not need an MVV can come to the Netherlands and apply for a residence permit at the town hall where he will be registered. When a person is a national of an EU or EEA country, this person can apply for a proof of lawful residence (based on the EU Treaty) or for a residence permit (based on the Dutch law).

For au pairs from Non-EU Member States:

If you would like to stay for longer than 3 months as an au pair in the Netherlands, you will need an MVV (authorisation for temporary stay) additionally to the visa.
